Silicone grip, suede patches, no grip... what's your ideal style of breeches or jodhpurs?

Equestrians have such different preferences on the kind of grip they want on their riding tights, breeches and jodhpurs - and for good reason!

The right grip on your riding tights can add a level of security and 'stickability' in the saddle that adds to your confidence; and may even be the deciding factor in whether you stay on or stay balanced in a moment of swift movement or when jumping.

But it's not ideal to feel an overly-grippy sensation where your jodhpurs stubbornly stick to the saddle when you need to be moving with the horse.

If you're not sure what you're looking for, you can have a chat with our saddlery team and they can help point you in the right direction, but here are a few options that might help.

Riding pants with Silicone Grip

Silicone grip breeches are designed for stability that should feel natural, not sticky - you want the perfect balance between grip, and freedom to move with your horse's movement. Some horse riders prefer the flexibility of knee-grip silicone and this is often popular with show jumpers or hunters; while often eventers, mums buying for their children, dressage riders, or anyone looking for extra security will often go for the added non-slip factor of full seat silicone grip.

The area of silicone grip is added to the fabric of breeches and riding tights before the fabric is cut to shape and sewn. More layers means more grip and stick, and better quality formula means a longer lasting silicone grip which doesn't get 'tacky'.

Hot tips for silicone grip breeches

  • Look for silicone that doesn't feel 'overly sticky' to the touch to avoid feeling stuck to your saddle
  • Choose silicone grip that has been applied in a low profile 'flat' pattern, as higher 'bumpier' silicone grip patterns are more likely to cause rub patches on your leg, or even cause wear on your saddle's leather
  • Ideally the grip pattern should have space between the spots of silicone for breathability and stretch-ability. Smaller, more open patterns are best.

Suede Seat Breeches & Jodhpurs

Riding pants with a suede seat are classic and elegant and the suede does add a level of useful grip to your breeches or jodhpurs. Modern fabric technology means that unlike the stiff and awkward traditional suede seat that jodhpurs used to have, the suede panels in breeches today are breathable, soft and flexible so they can stretch and move with the rider flawlessly. A suede grip on your riding breeches provides a soft comfortable grip that won't damage your legs or your saddle - and looks very stylish.

Look for panels that are shaped to suit you - the colour and texture contrast can be very flattering.

Riding Tights & Jodhpurs without Grip

If they are made with the right fabric, riding tights can keep equestrians perfectly secure in the saddle without any extra grip. Riding leggings or breeches without grip are often a preference for equestrians with sensitive skin who rub or chafe easily, or riders who prefer completely fluid movement in the saddle. Competitive horse riders will often choose a pair or riding breeches with no grip for show day.

Watch out for overly slippy or shiny fabrics - there is nothing worse than feeling like you're sitting in a slippery patch of oil!
